The Railways of Evenley

Saturday 3rd August 2024
Evenley Railway Map showing the routes of the Banbury to Buckingham branch and the Great Central Main Line from Sheffield to Marylebone as they pass through the extreme north-east tip of the parish.

The Banbury to Buckingham branch running west to east, and the Great Central main line to Marylebone running north to south.

The line from Bletchley to Banbury via Buckingham was opened in March 1850 and skirted through Evenley parish before entering Brackley station. It closed in December 1960 to passengers and December 1963 to goods traffic. The Great Central route from Sheffield to Marylebone, London, opened in 1899, with a station at Brackley Central. It crossed through Evenley parish on a north - south route crossing over the Buckingham branch on a high embankment. This is still walkable as far as the HS2 route in Mixbury parish. The last passenger train ran in the very early hours of Sunday September 4th, consisting of the Manchester Newspaper train with vans and one passenger coach. Freight traffic had ceased three years previously in 1963. Track and infrastructure removal took place over the next three years including a spectacular demolition of the magnificent Brackley viaduct in the first half of 1978. I have in my possession a video taken from inside a Nottingham bound passenger train in the 1960s which shows the train passing through the parish and over the Buckingam branch, which though closed still displayed the track intact but weed infested. Also from the same video an external shot of the Flying Scotsman hauling a 'special' over the Evenley embankment.

Once I have figured out how to transfer from video to PDF this will be uploaded to this site.
